About The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

With 61 chapters spanning the US and Canada, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

With the help of major fundraising campaigns, including Team in Training, the world’s largest endurance sports training program, and Light The Night Walk, the Society has supported more than $1.3 billion in research since 1949. The Society’s grant program currently supports more than 400 researchers at over 120 institutions.  Additionally, the Society provides a range of services such as family support groups, an extensive educational Web site, free seminars, conferences and educational materials, and direct patient financial aid.

The battles…

·Blood cancers are the second most fatal form of cancer, second only to lung cancer.

·Leukemia remains the leading cause of cancer death for children under age 20.

·Someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer every five minutes. Every ten minutes, another person loses the fight.

·823,000 Americans are presently battling leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

·There is no known cure.

    The TRIUMPHs…

·In 1974, the five-year survival rate for children with the most common form of leukemia was just 53%. Today, 86% of children diagnosed will survive

·A newly FDA approved drug, Gleevec, has been shown to normalize blood counts in nearly all patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Dr. Brian Druker, a Society-funded researcher, is responsible for this remarkable innovation in cancer research.
